Enrolling a TA

You do not need to manually enroll TAs in your Blackboard courses. Blackboard’s enrollment data comes directly from the University’s Student Information System and is updated several times each day. When a TA is officially assigned to your course, that TA is automatically added to your Blackboard course roster.

There are two ways to enroll a teaching assistant in your Blackboard course(s). The official [automatic] way is to contact your course’s department course scheduling coordinator and request that the coordinator enroll the teaching assistant into your course(s) in USC’s Student Information System (SIS).  Your department’s course scheduling coordinator is usually located in your department’s main office.

Please note that it is not possible for someone to be both a student and a TA within the same course. This is due to the fact that federal law [FERPA] and University policy both specifically prohibit students enrolled in a class from being able to modify their own grades or to view or modify the grades of other students enrolled in that same class. Blackboard automatically verifies and, if necessary, resets each student’s course access permissions several times a day.

IMPORTANT: Manually enrolled TA’s will not receive the end-of-semester course evaluation.

To ‘unofficially’ [manually] enroll someone a teaching assistant in your Blackboard course:

  1. Click Users & Group, then
  2. Click Users, next
  3. Go to Find Users to Enroll (Note: This step confuses some.  Do NOT click or use the search box.  Instead, click the Find Users to Enroll button in the upper left corner of the page.)

  4. Choose the TA you wish you manually enroll.
    • If you know the TA’s Blackboard username, manually type it into the Username box.  Do NOT click the browse button.  Instead, once you have keyed in the TA’s username, proceed directly to step 5.
    • If you do not know the TA’s Blackboard usernameleave the Username box empty and click the Browse button and then search for the TA.

      Tip: If the TA has a common last name, search for the TA’s official student email address instead (you can find most student email addresses in USC’s online student directory at https://my.usc.edu/wp/student/SearchForm.do).Once you have located the TA in Blackboard, select the TA and then in the bottom right corner of the pop-up window, click Submit.
  5. In the Role pull-down list, choose Teaching Assistant.
  6. Leave Enrollment Availability set to Yes.
  7. Click Submit.

Repeat steps 3 through 7 for each additional TA you wish to add.
